The piece

Forty feet of white oak shelving for a Portland café — shelves that look weightless and hold a full load of ceramics without a whisper of sag.

Each shelf is a torsion box: white oak skins over a stiff core, hung on concealed steel bored straight into the studs. From the front you see only wood; the engineering hides inside the wall.

The café owners wipe them down a dozen times a day, so the finish is a hardwax oil that shrugs off water rings and re-coats without sanding. Two years in, they still look the day they went up.
